Similarities - both were used to tell stories, to represent something or someone important (a god, a king, an emperor, a landscape), and tries to capture the audience sight, of course each one with it's features.

Differences - prehistoric art is abstract. The representation of the elements didn't follow strict rules, the artists just tried to transport to the canvas (or in many cases, the cave's wall) the main aspect of the object, animal, person or landscape. Plus, the tools used were less complex.

It's not correct to use the word "advanced" or "evolution" with art. The ancient art is just the next step, and the artists of this period, one way or another, they learned with their predecessors. If the prehistorical art is abstract, now they would try to express better what they want, studying more the art creation to obtain a good result.
