- Description: Take a visual inventory. Describe the objects/subject matter that is being represented. Briefly describe in 4-6 sentences what you see using facts only as if you were describing the work to someone over the phone to where they can visualize what you are looking at.

-Design Analysis: Listed below the main directions to this essay assignment in the lecture notes is a list of the visual elements and design principles. The visual elements and design principles are also studied in Chapters 3-4 and the Part One (B) learning module. Study the artwork you have selected and describe the visual elements (3-4 examples) and design principles (3-4 examples) found using the design vocabulary studied in the textbook and lecture notes. Make sure that you not only use the studied design vocabulary but also describe how they are being used using specific examples.

2. Art Media Analysis

-Describe the specific type of art media for the artwork you are evaluating (oil painting, bronze sculpture, silkscreen print, etc) and the art processes (glazing, lost wax casting, etc) associated with the artwork you are evaluating using the studied art media vocabulary from Chapters 6-14 and in the Part Two learning module. Discuss how the art media influences your observations concerning the artwork you are evaluating.

3. Interpretation

Consider why the artist made certain decisions concerning the imagery, the visual elements, the principles of design, and the art media used to create the artwork. Examine how this affects the content of the work. Discuss the symbolism of the individual objects/subject matter and their possible relationships when creating an interpretation for the artwork. Students should consider the following questions:

*Does the title of the work suggest what the purpose is?

*Does the work tell a story or a theme? If so, what?

*Why do you think the artist created the work? Explain.

*What emotion or mood do you feel when you view this work? Explain.

*Are there things in the artwork that represent other things--symbols? Explain.

4. Judgment

-Judge whether the artist was successful at communicating their idea in the work of art to their audience. In other words, do you think the artist used the visual elements and design principles to make the work successful? Explain. Also, consider what your own personal response is to the work.
