Crossing-over is an event during the meiosis (during prophase I) and represents the exchange of genetic material between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes. As a result of it, the creation of new combinations of genes on each chromosome occur. The exchange can happen many times within the same pair of homologous chromosomes, creating unique combinations of alleles.
