During primitive times, what might the witch doctor give a person to relieve pain or illness?

During primitive times, the herbs and plants were given to a person to relieve pain or illness by witch doctor. 
Additionally, the tribe witch doctors treated illness with ceremonies to drive out evil spirits, people believed that the cause of disease and illness was a punishment from the Gods.
