We know that radioactivity decays, in a constant rate, which means the rate of decay is the always the same. Given that, we just analise the rate of decay ofrom potassium-40 to argon-40 in comparison to the one on the rock, and determine it's age.

Therefore, the answer is Potassium. You might think, that because we were taling about Argon as well, the answer is both of them, but no. Everything starts with Potassium but it decays into Argon during the process.
