Absolute dating uses radiological techniques to get an "absolute" age (plus or minus error) of a rock. Fossils are almost never found in rock which can be absolutely aged, because they occur in sedimentary rock. Only igneous and some metamorphic rocks may be absolutely dated.

Because absolute dating gives rocks an actual date, or around the time, since they were originally fossilized. While relative dating, only puts geological events in time order.
