What might be the adaptive significance of bioluminescence in a dinoflagellate?

Around evening time, if Dinoflagellates are present in a water body it gives an appearance of shining light because of the phenomenon called bioluminescence. Dinoflagellates can utilize bioluminescence as a resistance component.

They can surprise their predators by their glimmering light or they can avert potential predators by an aberrant impact, for example, the "thief alert". The bioluminescence stands out to the Dinoflagellates and its aggressor, making the predator increasingly helpless against predation from higher trophic levels.
