The purpose for classifying organisms is to help scientists better understand the relationships and roles of different animal species. This view may change as our understanding of the natural world improves.

1. Our knowledge about the role of each species is not always complete or accurate.

2. The interactions and relationships between different species are subject to change. Many changes in the classification systems occurred as the usage of modern DNA techniques became more spread. Thus, in some cases, where populations were classified as part of the same species, they were proven to be two closely related species.
