The reason to this is because the species genes couldn't adapt to the changes that occurred, which means that they couldn't keep up with their environment and eventually became "non-adapted".

If a species has a high genetic variation, it will be able to adapt easily to new conditions, which means that it has lower chances of going exctinct as opposed to those with lowe genetic variation.
