Adult stem cells are multipotent undifferentiated cells that divide to replenish old cells and regenerate damaged tissues.  Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent stem cells, i.e., they are able to produce any cell in the human body, which are derived from the inner cell mass of the blastocyst. Adult stem cells have the potential to renew themselves and differentiate in order to generate specialized cell types (e.g., skin cells); however, their potential to produce other types of cells in comparison to embryonic stem cells is limited. Adult stem cells are generally difficult to locate (and also obtain). Embryonic stem cells are easier to locate because they can be found in the inner cell mass of the blastocyst. Finally, different experiments have also demonstrated that adult stem cells are difficult to grow into a particular type of cell.
