A hurricane is caused by the convection of air masses with differences in densities mainly due to their differences in temperatures. The warmer, less dense air mass rises as the cooler, denser one descends. Between these two air masses is a front.  The spin of the hurricane front is caused by the rotation of the earth (Coriolis effect). In the southern hemisphere, currents are deflected to the right (hence hurricanes rotate counterclockwise) while in the northern hemisphere they are deflected to the left (hence hurricanes rotate clockwise).
