Chickenpox or varicella is a common childhood disease. It is caused by the herpes virus. Herpes is a DNA virus. Chickenpox is highly contagious and transmitted by infectious droplets from the infected person. This virus comes by respiration. This is more rampant during cold months. From the respiratory system, it moves to the bloodstream of the individual. Then the varicella virus comes to the skin surface. In the skin, it causes rashes and painful skin eruptions known as shingles. In the skin water containing blisters also forms. After 2 to 3 days of infection, the blisters start to shrink. Some blisters which burst out, it spreads more water containing blisters over the skin. These are red and found in all areas of skin like hands, faces, foots, thighs, etc. It causes irritation, dryness and itching in the skin. Person also suffer from fever and feels severe pain in the body. After completion of the chickenpox cycle , this leaves marks on the skin and sometimes disfigure the skin. The chickenpox virus can remain dormant in nerve cells for years. The T - cells of immune system fight against it.
