Both chloroplasts and mitochondria are surrounded a double membrane, the outer and the inner membrane.

The inner membrane of a mitochondrion is like folded finger-like structure called cristae. It provides a larger surface area for the many chemical reactions such as filtering and attaching molecules to transport proteins. The transport proteins carry the selected molecule into the matrix.

The inner membrane of the chloroplast is folded and arranged into flattened sacs called thylakoids. On the thylakoids chlorophyll pigments are present.
