DNA replication must come first before meiosis to happen.Previous to replication, a germ cell contains two copies of each chromosome, a maternal  copy. and a paternal copy.

The replication of chromosome is followed by meiosis.

Before meiosis really starts, the DNA that is bundled into chromosomes must be completely duplicated. Past to replication, a cell of germ contains two duplicates of every chromosome, a maternal copy and a fatherly copy. The maternal and fatherly homologs depict the maternal and fatherly hereditary contribution to every cell and guarantee that every cell has a half hereditary make-up originating from each parent. These two chromosomes are autonomous yet fundamentally the same as and are named homologs of one another.  

DNA replication happens in a similar manner as it does during mitosis. After replication, the homologs are multiplied, and every chromosome presently has a homologous pair.
