Each animal species has a critical population density and a below which survival may be jeopardized because males and females have a difficult time finding each other. once a population falls below this critical size it continues to decline even if the species is protected. below this size genetic diversity also decreases reducing a population's gene pool from inbreeding thus lowering its ability to respond to environmental changes.
