Ocean currents are cause due to winds, tides and water density. Variation in water density,temperature and salinity causes ocean currents. When the ocean water freezes to ice  on its surface,then the salt which is in the ocean water left. It circulates nearby seas and turns the seawater into more saltier and denser.The extremely cold salty water sinks to the depth of the ocean thereby surface water flows in to replace the sinking water.This in turn becomes salty and cold enough to sink.There is a connection between a surface and deep water current that circulates around the world oceanic waters and it took nearly 1000 yrs of span.
