Sex-linked pedigrees are different from autosomal pedigrees because sex-linked pedigrees show the inheritance of sex-linked traits which tend to appear more in males than females. A sex-linked trait is a trait that is coded for by a gene on the sex chromosomes, either X or Y. X-linked traits appear both in males and females but they appear in males with more frequency. Females are often carriers. In Y-linked traits, only males express the trait because only males inherit a Y chromosome. Thus, if the inheritance on a pedigree shows greater expression in males compared to females, the trait could be sex-linked.
