Photosynthesis and respiration generate ATP by thesame mechanism, Chemiosmosis. In plants cells it occurs in the chroplast and mitochondrial in animal cells. An electron transport chain is assembled in a membrane pumps protons across the membrane as electrons are passed through a series of carriers that are progressively more electronegative.

In both kinds chloroplasts and mitochondrial electron transport chain pump protons (H+) across a membrane from a region of low (H+) concentration to high H+ concentration. The protons then diffuse back across the membrane through ATP synthase, driving the synthesis of ATP.
