Well probably a tolerance to the high salinity levels present at sea
as most organisms can only live a certain salinity levels a marine animal would have to adapted to high salinity levels to prevent  loss of water via osmosis plus the levels off potable water are presumably low so they would have to be well adapted to the high salt levels of ocean water
