The bathypelagic zone spans from one to four thousand meters in depth. It is called the midnight zone, as there is total absence of sunlight. Marine animals in this zone survive on the dead and decaying organic matter sinking from the upper zones. This matter is called marine detritus. They also prey on other animals.
