A disorder known as acidosis occurs when the CO2 levels are excessive in arterial blood. This is characterised as the blood pH being inferior to 7.35. The body uses bicarbonate in the lood to maintains equilibrium. As the body reacts to this disorder, there may be an electrolyte imbalance-an increase in potassium, plasma chloride, sodium and calcium. Concentration of CO2 in the blood stream is also regulated by reversible reactions with two main blood components haemoglobin and plasma proteins .  

Additionally, the body uses certain different mechanisms to balance the excess carbon dioxide including increase in respiratory rate, blood pressure rise and rise in heart rate.
