Look at the following passage from "Three Wonders of the World." Choose the two sentences that
explain why the water at Hot Springs National Park needs to be cooled.
Hot Springs National Park
Long before there were hot tubs, people used hot springs. The water helped them relax. Hot
springs are made of hot water that comes up from underground. Scientists say that for
thousands of years, people have used the hot springs of Arkansas for drinking. They also bathe
in it. Some people say the springs help them heal. Today, the hot springs are part of Hot
Springs National Park
The spring water comes from rainwater that seeps into the ground where it is heated by hot
rocks. The hot water goes back up through cracks in the ground. It may bring up minerals and
other matter from deep within the earth. This does not happen overnight, however. It takes
thousands of years.
Hot Springs National Park set up in 1921. People came to bathe in the water. But the water was
143 degrees Fahrenheit. That's too hot for human skin. So mechanisms were set up to cool the
water. Today, more than one million people visit the park each year. Some bathe, but most
camp and hike on the grounds that surround the springs
