Sod or turf is grass with the top layer of soil held together by the grass roots. A sod farmer cuts strips of turf and rolls them up for delivery. The fresh sod is used in sports stadiums, golf courses, and lawns.
Back where the turf was removed is an empty expanse of bare dirt. Within a day, seeds from dandelions are dropped by the wind. There is plenty of sunlight and space for the new seeds. No other plants are around to compete. The new plants grow quickly in their habitat and produce many seeds.
