The woolly mammoth was a relative of elephants that lived in the far north. There is much debate in the scientific community about what caused the extinction of mammoths. Climate models show that changing weather patterns stressed mammoth populations. Hunting by humans may have also reduced populations. The youngest mammoth remains on a continent are 10,000 years old. Preserved teeth and stomachs show that mammoths were grass-eaters. A modern elephant of similar size consumes up to 440 pounds of food and 60 gallons of water daily. Mammoths needed a lot of living space as well. Evidence shows that they roamed hundreds of miles in search of food. The last mammoths lived on Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean until 3,600 year ago. The mammoths died out soon after the arrival of the first humans on the island.

Describe at least three limiting factors that mammoths likely faced in their island habitat.
