Static electricity can happen when electrons transfer to your clothes or hair and give them a charge.

I think it gives them a negative charge. This is because your hair and clothes have a tiny positive charge. When static electricity happens, the electrons transfer negative charges to the positive charge which causes static electricity. (so sorry if it's wrong!)
