You collect two cuttings from 20 individuals of the mophead Hydrangea plant (Hydrangea macrophylla). You plant one cutting, which represents a genetic clone, from each individual plant in two different soil types - low pH and high pH. You notice that flower color across the 20 individual cuttings in each soil type varies quite a bit as does the flower color between soil types. Given this information you conclude that the environment, acting though soil pH, is the only thing affecting flower color. Is this a correct interpretation of your observations?
