Plants are also known as producers, because they produce energy through photosynthesis. Consumers eat the producers (plants) to gain energy. The consumers are then eaten by top consumers. Humans are included in this category. Decomposers, such as mushrooms and fungi, eat dead and decomposing consumer bodies. On occasion, they will eat a dying producer's "body" as well.
