An isotonic solution is a solution where solute concentration across a semipermeable membrane is the same, thereby there is no net flow of water (H2O) molecules. In consequence, if a cell is placed in an isotonic solution, the cell's volume will remain stable (i.e., the cell is in Osmotic Equilibrium).A hypertonic solution is a solution where there is a greater concentration of solute molecules outside the cell than inside the cell. If a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, H2O molecules will out the cell and therefore this cell will shrink. A hypotonic solution is a solution where there is a lower concentration of solute molecules outside the cell than inside the cell. If a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution, H2O molecules will enter the cell, and therefore this cell will swell.

In conclusion, the point where the concentration of H2O molecules is the same on both sides of a biological membrane is called the ISOTONIC POINT.

isotonicity can also occur between two membranes when due to the process of Osmosis, the concentration on both sides of of the membrane have equalised.
