The sensory systems of the body are required to translate elements of the outside world (e. g. sounds, sights, and tactile stimuli) into electrical impulses that can encode the stimulus duration, intensity, and changes (e. g. onset/offset) in a stimulus. Describe how sensory systems encode stimulus duration, intensity, and changes (onset/offset) in general. Then, for each stimulus feature (duration, intensity, and changes) choose one of the sensory systems we've studied (visual, auditory, and mechanosensory) and describe the mechanisms that allow the sensory system to encode that stimulus feature. You must use a different sensory system as the example for each of the stimulus features (e. g. visual system for stimulus duration). Limit your discussion to the portion of the stimulus transduction pathway that directly translates the physical stimulus into an electrical signal within a sensory cell and the resulting change in action potential production.
