This is the portion of  a wet land that is constantly flooded by tides,,and as the salt water carried by the tide regresses, it  drained this portion of land leaving a wet land.This wetland is called salt mashes.They are ubiquitous,in the estuary habitat.

The soil layer is mostly of deep mud and peat.The latter contain decomposing plant material carried  by the tide.The oxygen level is usually low,due to activities of bacteria abundant in the soil.Its vegetation contain some covered grasses,herbs,and shrubs,because the constant flooding depleted the soil nutrients.

Humanity has come to realized that these wetlands has some benefits

1.it Protect the shorelines from being washed away by erosion.This is because it reduced the momentum of erosion  by buffering the effect of the waves,reducing it speed and therefore reducing the damaging effect of the erosion.,

It also reduces flooding by reducing run off, by allowing rain water to sink deep,therefore prevent stagnancy of  water on the soil surface, slowing down the pace,which would have removed the topmost layer containing nutrients

It also improve the quality if water available,because he debris carried the tides serve as the sever to filter the water,separating sediment,improving quality.
