Activity - Permeability
Hello Jacqueline,
In this experiment, you will take what you leamed about selective permeability and design your own experiment to see whether plastic bags are permeable or not.
You will need:
• Containers large enough to hold liquid and a plastic bag full of liquid
• Small plastic bags (hint: the cheaper, the better)
• Twist ties
• Graduated cylinder
• Starch solution (starch is mixed with water at whatever concentration you choose)
• Iodine solution (Caution: lodine is poisonous and needs to be handled very carefully. If you get some on your hands, wash them Immediately).
• Masking tape
* To make starch and lodine solutions, add desired amount of starch or lodine to a graduated cylinder and fill the rest of the cylinder with distilled water.
Problems: Will lodine be able to cross the membrane into the plastic bag? will starch, which is a larger molecule, be able pass through the plastic bag? Do plastic bags have selective
permeability?
One possible hypothesis (Yours can be different): If lodine and starch molecules are small enough, then they will be able
pass through the membrane.
Scientific knowledge: Diffusion happens by molecules moving from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.
Doing the experiment: some suggestions
Put the solution (either lodine or starch) in a plastic bag. Seal it with a twist tie and masking tape. Rinse the outside of the bag to make sure any solution is removed on the outside of the bag.
Put the sealed bag into a container filled with water.
• Walt 24 hours. Then record your data,
• Do all your bags at the same time. You will need a container for each solution and different concentrations of the solutions you want to experiment with. At the minimum, you will need one
bag with starch and one bag with lodine. You can try different concentrations or even different substances, but you will at least need to have the two just mentioned.
