To measure cellular metabolic rate in animals, scientists often measure the activity of cytochrome c oxidase enzyme (in enzyme complex 4 which causes electrons to leave cyt c). This is done by measuring the change in colour of the indicator dye over time. The more active the enzyme is, the more dilute the dye becomes. Why? Also, why use this enzyme as the indicator of activity?
