No living beings can survive alone. There always exists a close relationship between living and non - living things. The environment of the earth consists of physical and biological factors. The physical and biological factors together constitute an ecosystem. The ecosystem may be natural or artificial , temporary or permanent. Thus, an ecosystem is an ecological unit which consists of both biotic ( living ) and abiotic ( non - living ) factors of the environment. The organisms and the environment are inseparably interrelated and interactive in their nature. A.G. Tansley ( 1935 ) , a British ecologist used the term ecosystem first.
