The electron transport chain is located in the membranes of mitochondria. This electron transport chain is a method used by the mitochondria to send protons towards the intermembrane space. This creates a proton gradient that drives protons through ATP synthase, thus creating ATP.

This process produces only a small amount of the ATP created by the mitochondria, and its main purpose is to create a proton motive force that will drive the synthesis of ATP through cellular respiration.
