started talking about what happens to the wood when you have a fire. Here's what they thought...
Maria: I think some of the wood turns into carbon dioxide in a transformation of kinetic energy to chemical energy.
Dad: I think some of the wood turns into the energy that keeps the fire burning.
Steve: I think some of the wood just burns up and disappears.
Mom: I think the wood turns into a mixture of carbon dioxide and water as a result of an exothermic reaction.

the oldest known insects are believed to live around 400 millions ago as suggested by the fossil records.   some plants having woody stems also evolved during this time.

after the evolution of insects the first four legged species or the tetrapods evolved in shallow freshwater habitats from the intermediate species approximately 397 million years ago. the tetrapods went on conquering the land giving rise to amphibians, reptiles, mammals and birds.

the major split in tetrapods first occurred 340 million years ago branching off from amphibians.

363 million years ago when the carboniferous period began the insects started roaming on land and taking flights, following which the four limbed tetrapods adapted in the terrestrial habitat.

the last one: artificial selection/genetic engineering

plant breeding is modifying the genetic composition of the plant - but this isn't cloning (which is specifically introducing a gene into a genome). but you are artificially selecting for the phenotype that you want.

the second one is literally genetic engineering - the gene would have been cloned first and then inserted or genetically engineered into the new plant cell (the cotton).
