Answers to the first section of the marine science portfolio, unit 4 lab: 1. In this unit, we learned about severe weather disasters and their repercussions. According to Murphy, explain how reducing the initial emergency response by one day can reduce the overall recovery by 1000 days?

If the initial responders can get in and save lives and medigate whatever flooding danger there is, that means the other groups can get in to restore the water, the roads, the electricity, and that means the construction people can then get in to rebuild the houses, which then means you can restore the economy... and maybe even make it better and more resilient.

2. Explain the two different types of UAVs and how they are used.

A rotorcraft/hummingbird and a fixedwing/hawk. A rotorcraft is mostly used by structural engineers. It helps to let you see damage from angles that you wouldn’t normally get access to. The fixedwing is used for geospatial surveys. It pulls images together and helps with 3D reconstruction.

3. Explain why unmanned marine vehicles are so useful—provide specific examples or facts from the video.

Marine vehicles are very important because they can do things that we as humans cannot, and do them more efficiently than us even if we were capable. One example is the SARbot. They were able to re-open the destroyed port from the Haiti earthquake because of SARbot and its advanced sonar system. It would have taken people months to restore the port without an unmanned marine vehicle.

4. Murphy ends her talk by saying, “It’s not about the robots. It’s about the data.” What does she mean by this? How is this pertinent to severe weather disasters?

She was saying that robots aren't the main thing we should be concerned about, it's the actual data that they give us.
