The unique intercellular connections between muscle cells are called intercalated discs. They are in the cardiac muscle. An intercalated disc has gap junctions and desmosomes, which are two ways that cells use to communicate with each other. Gap junctions connect neighbor cells, and desmosomes keep the cardiac cells together.
