There are different techniques used for population estimation in an ecosystem. Some include the use of quadrant, traps/foot prints, use of bisect and use of photograph among others. These techniques depend on the type of ecosystem involved.

Explanation: The formula used to estimate population using Quadrant method is given as:

N = (Area of sites x total number of individuals) ÷ (Area of the Quadrant x number of throws)

Note that, the area of the sites must have the unit as the area of the quadrant before you can use this formula.

Quadrants are used for actively mobile organisms and on a grassland ecosystem. They are not suitable for any vegetation that is not uniform or slant topography.
