Rivers are mostly lowered in the ground about two to three feet below the original ground

the "contour" is most likely the lower parts unlike the "lines" which are higher up

sandstone is on top

shale is below the river

river is above shale but below sandstone

the contour is above sandstone but below lines

Explanation:

so the lines are above every thing and shale is at the bottom because it contains mud and mud gets created from water leaking into the ground and soaking in, also clay gets mixed from mud and coming from beside or below rivers.
