In 1966, the population of wolves in the Yellowstone area was at a critical low. Biologists were concerned with the excessively high elk population that was causing an imbalance of the ecosystem. Elk and other large prey animals gathered in large herds causing vegetation to be overgrazed. Coyotes filled the niche of the wolves in the ecosystem affecting populations of small prey animals. The five last known wild Mexican gray wolves were captured in 1980. Starting in 1995, grey wolf packs were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park and Idaho where their numbers continue to grow. Explain how the reintroduction of wolves likely affected organism biodiversity in Yellowstone.
