"There's only one replication event in meiosis (prior to the first division), but two divisions -- which necessarily must reduce the number of chromosomes by half. Replication results in each of the chromosomes being duplicated; the two chromosomes that arise as the result of replicating one chromosome are physically joined together, typically by a structure called the centromere. (This is what gives chromosomes about to enter into mitosis or meiosis their characteristic X shape.) These joined chromosomes are called sister chromatid pairs."
