Most chameleons eat insects. Since chameleons don't move fast, a chameleon's tongue darts rapidly out of its mouth to catch prey. The tongue can move faster than a human eye can see it. This tongue has a sticky spot on the end so prey cannot escape. The tongue also has specialized muscles that form a suction cup to hold the insect prey. The tongue reels in the prey and the chameleon's strong jaws crush it before it's swallowed. Due to the crushing power of its jaws, a chameleon can eat insects larger than itself. Most chameleon species have a specialized tongue and jaws for eating
