Another example of analogous features are the arctic fox and the willow ptarmigan (a bird), which shares a habitat. Both species experience a seasonal change of coloration from dark in the summer to white in the winter. While they also have homologous structures that indicate a common ancestor at some point in their evolutionary history, they did not inherit this color changing ability from a common ancestor, each species developed it independently. Why did this occur and why is this evidence of evolution?
