50 pts Clinical research is taking place on a promising new drug to treat a heart condition that causes irregular heart beats. In vitro studies have shown the drug works on heart tissue, and animal studies have shown the drug is safe and effective in mice. The clinical trials design is outlined below:

The research facility recruited 100 human volunteers that, other than their heart condition, are healthy. The volunteers were divided into two groups. Group 1 is given the medication at 8 a. m. and 8 p. m. daily, and Group 2 is given a placebo at 8 a. m. and 8 p. m. daily . Both groups have an EKG taken twice a day at noon and at 4 p. mto measure the rate and rhythm of their heart. ( Note: An EKG is a test that checks the electrical activity of the heart and heart rate. It shows whether the heart is beating in a regular rhythm or in an irregular rhythm.)

1. List all of the things in this design that are the same for both Group A and Group B:

2. The items you listed in #1 above is the in this experiment because they are kept the same for both groups.

3. What is it that the researchers measure each day at noon and 4 p. m.?

4. The item you listed in #3 above is the variable in this experiment, because that is what the experiment is measuring.

5. What two items are being given to the volunteers?

6. Both of the items you listed above are considered to be "medicine," so what kind of variable is the medication? variable.

7. Which group is the experimental group ?

8. Which group is the control group?

9. Which group would show no change in their heart rhythm and rate

10. Which group would show improvement if the drug is effective ?

How does upwelling affect coastal fisheries? upwelling damages nutrient supplies at coastal fisheries as the warm, nutrient-rich surface water is replaced by nutrient-poor, cold water. upwelling damages nutrient supplies at coastal fisheries as the cold, nutrient-rich surface water is replaced by nutrient-poor, warm water. upwelling improves the nutrient supply at coastal fisheries as the warm, nutrient-rich surface water replaces the nutrient-poor, cold water. upwelling improves the nutrient supply at coastal fisheries as cold, nutrient-rich water replaces the warm, nutrient-poor surface water.

Hormones are chemical molecules produced by endocrine glands. one such endocrine gland is the thyroid gland, which synthesizes the thyroid hormone, which in turn affects the heart muscles. which two statements describe the probable reason for the function of the hormone? the cells in the heart have specific receptors that allow for the intake of hormones. the heart and the endocrine glands have the exact same types of cells. all cells make the same types of hormones. thyroid hormones show their effect on the heart by means of specialized cells. thyroid cells and cardiac cells have different dna.

(me out over the last several centuries, scientists have made the following broad observations while investigating several branches of the life sciences: -the fossil record shows that different types of organisms have existed at different times in earth's history. -many organisms have similar body structures that seem to be adapted to different ways of living in their environment. -organisms of different species often share similarities in stages of embryonic development. -many species share genetic similarities, and almost all organisms use the same basic building blocks to construct proteins. -often, the extent of two species' similarities can be predicted from their geographic closeness to each other. -a great deal of change has been observed among species that have experienced strong selective pressures through many generations. scientists have carefully considered and rigorously tested the observations listed above. when scientists offer a of these observations, they are making 1.) testable explanation, deductive explanation 2.) scientific interference, scientific law
