Part A An organism's adaptations are specific to its native environment. An organism that lives in a coniferous forest will
have different adaptations compared to an animal that lives in a tropical rain forest. The following graphs show the
temperature and precipitation throughout the year for two different forests: a coniferous forest in Canada, and a
tropical rain forest in Belize.
Evaluate the graphs, and then explain why plants from these two ecosystems will have different adaptations. In
your answer, explain the survival challenges that plants face in these two environments.

1. variations in a population of moths allow for some of its members to be able to adapt to environmental changes. the better adapted of the moths will be able to survive the change and thus prevail as the β€œfittest” of the species. (a) describe three mechanisms in which variation can occur within a species population. (b) explain which mechanism or mechanisms would be responsible for the survival of a population of peppered moths better than white moths in an environment affected by industrial soot. justify your answer.

Aresearcher designed an investigation to test what effect eating different types of food would have on blood insulin levels. she selected 10 male subjects who were all 25 years of age and in good health. the experiment took place over 3 days. at 8: 00 a.m. on each day, the subjects ate a meal consisting of only 1 type of food. they had their blood insulin levels measured after consuming the meal. on day 1 they ate a high fat diet, on day 2 they ate a high protein diet, and on day 3 they ate a high sugar diel what is the independent variable in this experiment? a the age of the subjects b the blood insulin level c the type of food consumed d the time of day the meal was consumed

The kidney filters potentially toxic substances in the blood, and thus β€œclears” the blood of those substances. this clearance function is dependent upon and proportional to the diffusion gradient of the substance across filtering capillaries, i.e. if the concentration of the substance is doubled, twice as much will be cleared from each ml of blood that is filtered. suppose that the body produces a constant amount of a substance x per unit of time. the kidneys eliminate substance x at a rate directly proportional to the concentration of the substance and the volume of blood cleared each minute (c): elimination = c Γ— [x], where [x] is the steady-state concentration of substance x. imagine an individual with an initial concentration of x equal to [x]0 who develops kidney disease. her baseline clearance c0 drops to one half of the original (Β½c0). what is the new steady state concentration of x? (for simplicity, assume that substance x is 100% filtered by the kidney).
