The path that the Earth takes around the sun is called an orbit. A complete orbit occurs every year.

The path of Earth around the sun is called orbit. It is elliptical in shape. Due to the elliptical shape the the earth gets varied amount of sunlight during its revolution. It means when the earth is at 2 end of the elliptical path it gets less sunlight and when the Earth is closer path of sun it gets more sun light. This elliptical path is also responsible for season change in the Earth in addition with Earth's rotation around itself.
