The case: A 19 year-old man who still lives with his parents is deciding whether to
sign a form authorizing a blood transfusion during a complex surgery he is having.
He understands the risks and benefits described by the physician, but his parents
(whose religious views prohibit blood transfusions) are in the room during the
discussion and, knowing their opposition to the procedure, he marks the 'decline'
box on the informed consent sheet.
