The liver enzyme glucokinase (hexokinase IV) has a Km of 10 mM. A mutation that decreases the Km of glucokinase to 1 mM leads to overall hypoglycemia (decreased blood glucose levels). However, the mechanism for hypoglycemia is different just after a meal (20 minutes after a high carbohydrate meal) than after an 8 hour fast. Explain this difference in mechanisms between these 2 situations.
