Why are observed ratios often different to expected ratios in genetics?

The expected ratio is based on each probability occurring. However, this is not the case realistically. For example, if a trait has a 25% chance of being passed on, this does not mean that one in four offspring will have that trait. It means that there is a 25% chance for EACH of the offspring to have that trait. This causes the observed and expected ratios to differ.
