What process cause changes to occur on wet paper?

A typical piece of paper is composed mostly of cellulose wood fibers. These fibers are reinforced and fused by strong hydrogen bonds. When paper gets wet, however, those bonds are damaged and the fibers separate more easily. In turn, the paper becomes weak and tears.
